Minsuh’ Historical Fiction Vignettes

Two years to go

Girls my age, the girls who don’t have to go to dusty factories and live in one room with the whole family–they go to school. School is a place where adults read stories to kids and children talk to each other run around and play tag, get their own desks and LEARN. But while they go to school, I have to walk around these machines all day and breathe in bad air. I wish I could be breathing in the school’s fresh, cool air right now, or even tomorrow. Maybe I could go to school someday when Mama comes back. She said she will be back someday when I’m twelve, she promised to. Just two years to go.. She said she’s going to bring me a happy life, I think it was a good thing but I don’t know why she cried that much. Just two years to go and Mama and I will have a cozy, warm house for our family. Just two years and my Mama will teach me how to knit–a hat for my brothers and a pair of gloves for my father so he won’t feel cold with the cast on his arm and I’ll knit a long scarf for Mama and I.. so we could recognise each other in case we ever fall apart again.

The floating house

I’ve never seen so many people in my life–So many kinds of people! I was really excited for my big journey, but as my relatives in the states say, it is not that easy. Even going on the floating house was tough. First, I tried to buy a ticket but the lady who was selling them won’t let me and kept talking about children tickets and adult tickets, which I couldn’t understand because she spoke in a language called English. I took nearly an hour to get that piece of paper that would let me enter into the house that floated on water. When I sat on one of the seats in the house, a guy wearing a blue shirt which had a bunch of silver stuck to it started yelling at me to go to the lower level. Maybe it was his seat, I felt kind of sorry for him. After I sat on another chair that looked a little browner and older than the seat the one I just sat on. It was really tough but I kept on dreaming about the life I would have in America.
Grey eyes

Why a young girl in a place like this? She looked like she was 13 or 15, but her young, bright face covered with ashes, hard, rough palms with not even a hint of softness of a child’s hand. They say her mother died when she was five, father was deaf-mute and and her brother, who ran away. Once, she rode the train for 8hours to find her brother who was her only hope it the letters that he said, that said he was raising money was nothing but a pile of lies. He took the money she brought and ran away. From that day and on, she never smiled, not even a drop of smirk on her face was found. Her eyes looked like she had lost everything and what was left was a grey in her eyes.

Vignette Minsuh Chung

Korea is small as a pea, a tiny country compared to their neighbors China, and Japan. These countries have affected each other for a long time like language, clothing and also food.Dried seaweed with a greenish black colour, ‘Gim’ is one of the food Japan and Korea share. The only difference was that back then, Japan sold Packaged Gim which was Gim so people who are fussy about food can eat Gim also while traveling.

My visiting Japan, my grandfather found Packaged Gim and brought it to Korea right away, and started his factory.

Not big and luxurious but people started to take interest for the Packaged Gim and bigger companies started to sell it as well. But my grandfather’s factory was not able to compete against those companies and was pushed to the side.

Science reflection (Jan.19th)

January 19th
Biodiversity–How many kinds of living thing? What is meant by kind? How do scientists decide how to classify living things? Why?

What do you think the function of a fruit is? How do you think these functions are carried out? What do you think a seed is? How do you think a plant makes a fruit and seeds?

I think the function of a fruit is to get the seeds and plant them and make more plants.

I think a seed is a birth of another plant.

I think a plant makes fruits and seed by blooming a flower then the petals get peeled off and the seed makes a shield(?) for itself and that is the fruit.
Structure: how it’s put together
Observe the fruits closely (Tomato, Capsicum, Eggplant). What do you notice? What are the various structures of the fruit? What are the parts and how are they arranged and put together?
Bell pepper:

I noticed that there were a lot of seeds and they were really small and they were in between the walls(?)

Most of the seeds were in the middle.

Lot of juice.seeds are in between the wall

Last reflection about Motion

It was a tough unit because I didn’t know exactly what motion actually was. But it was also fun to get to know one by one what it meant by trying different experiments. But if I could start over the experiments, I would write down everything. For example, when we did the rocket project, my partner and I forgot who took the video for us and it took us such a long time to figure out who took it. To stop that from happening again, I think I should write it down.

Reflection on poster

This project was a project where we couldn’t write any words and we had to use only pictures to explain what we did in this experiment.

I showed how the person pumped and then the other person pulled and how that made the rocket fly by using arrows, I also showed which way the rocket flew.

Rocket experiment (motion)

My partner and I made a rocket out of a bottle. Through many fails, we finally finished it.

We made it with two bottles. One top part and one whole. We cut the top part of the bottle and taped that to the bottom of them other bottle and also added three fins.

During the experiment, we did 2 trials. The first trial, we put 300ml of water. We tried to get how much seconds the rocket stayed in the air and we got about five seconds. As for the second trial, we tried it without any water in it. Unfortunately we lost data for the second one.

After the experiment, I became curious if we make the rocket a different way, would it still go up in the air.
